Piriformis syndrome causes pain or numbness in your butt, hip or upper leg. It occurs when the piriformis muscle presses on the sciatic nerve. The condition may be caused by injury, swelling, muscle spasms or scar tissue in the piriformis.
Piriformis syndrome occurs when your piriformis muscle compresses your sciatic nerve and results in inflammation. It can cause pain or numbness in your buttock and down the back of your leg. It can happen on one side of your body or both.

The exact causes of piriformis syndrome causes include Muscle spasm in the piriformis muscle, either because of irritation in the piriformis muscle itself, or irritation of a nearby structure such as the sacroiliac joint or hip Tightening of the muscle, in response to injury or spasm Swelling of the piriformis muscle, due to injury or spasm Bleeding in the area of the piriformis muscle. In serious cases of piriformis syndrome, the pain in your buttocks and legs can be so severe it becomes disabling.
