Kyphosis

WE CONSIDER FOR FUNCTIONAL RESTORATION OF YOUR NORMAL POSTURE

Kyphosis is an exaggerated, forward rounding of the back. Kyphosis is often due to weakness in the spinal bones that causes them to compress or crack. Other types of kyphosis can appear in infants or teens due to malformation of the spine or wedging of the spinal bones over time.

A diagnosis of kyphosis assumes a difference in the shape of one or more vertebrae. This difference is present at birth. The child is noted at birth to have an outward curve of the spine. This curve may become more noticeable with growth.

Two risk factors for developing kyphosis are having osteoporosis or low bone density, or having a family member with the condition.

SYMPTOMS

Patients may also notice a difference in their appearance prompting further evaluation. The most common area to feel back pain related to kyphosis is in the mid back, or thoracic spine. Other common symptoms include:

  • Back pain or stiffness

  • Shortness of breath or breathing difficulty

  • Changes in appearance (more rounding of shoulder blades, hunchback)

  • Poor posture

  • Inability to lay completely flat

  • Sometimes associated with radiating pain into arms or legs

The treatments themselves do not ‘cure’ the condition- we simply restore the body’s self-healing ability.
