Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

YOUR HEALTH OUR EXPERTISE-YOUR HEALTH OUR PRIORITY

In most patients, carpal tunnel syndrome gets worse over time. If untreated for too long, it can lead to permanent dysfunction of the hand, including loss of sensation in the fingers and weakness.

If pressure on the median nerve continues, however, it can lead to nerve damage and worsening symptoms. To prevent permanent damage, manual therapy to take pressure off the median nerve may be recommended for some patients.

SYMPTOMS

  • Numbness at night

  • Tingling and/or pain in the fingers (especially the thumb, index and middle fingers)

  • Tingling in the fingers

  • Decreased feeling in the fingertips

  • Difficulty using the hand for small tasks

  • Handling small objects

  • Holding a book to read

  • Painful Writing

  • Weakness in the hand

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the tunnel becomes narrowed or when the tissue surrounding the flexor tendons (known as synovium) swells, putting pressure on the median nerve and reducing its blood supply.  This abnormal pressure on the nerve can result in numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness in the hand muscles.

Treating your carpal tunnel syndrome early with manual therapy and lifestyle changes can lead to significant long-term improvement, and eliminate symptoms.
